Muhammad Ahmed, the practice manager at Teehey Lane Medical Centre in Wirral was named Practice Manager of the Year at the GP Awards in London last night.

In 2012 the practice was failing to provide quality care and react to it’s large elderly population, a spokesperson from the practice said.

There were inefficiencies in practice design, a falling list size, and patients waited for weeks to see a GP or nurse. Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) results were not on target and there was no participation in local enhanced services (LES)/directed enhanced services (DES) schemes, while the building premises were not fit for purpose.

However, after Dr M Salahuddin acquired the practice he hired Muhammad Ahmed to “create a team, and make the practice fit for purpose”.

In the practices most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, it recalls that patients have now said that they were able to get an appointment when they needed one and were generally able to see the GP they requested to see. Moreover, one patient said: “I am never rushed. I was in an appointment for half an hour today.”

When patients register at the practice they complete a health questionnaire which provides important information about their past medical history, current health concerns and lifestyle choices. The service offers new patients a consultation with a nurse or GP so that their individual needs are assessed and access to support and treatment is available as soon as possible. Patients’ notes were requested from their previous GP to ensure continuity of care and treatment.

Another winner from the awards at the Lancaster Hotel yesterday was GP of the Year Dr Yassir Javaid for his work reducing stroke emergency admissions in the East Midlands, and Nurse of the Year was Heather Lomas.
