NHS Direct will close at the end of the financial year, with all elements of the service ceased by March 2014.
The organisation, which is an NHS trust, announced earlier this year that it was seeking to withdraw from its 11 NHS 111 contracts. NHS Direct will cease to support NHS 111 in February 2014.
NHS Direct also runs an information website, GP appointment booking phone like and a complaints service.
But following a review, the NHS Trust Development Authority and NHS England concluded that the organisation did not have a “viable future” independently.
Now that commissioners have identified alternative providers, NHS Direct is able to close operations.
Services that had been commissioned from NHS Direct will now be transferred to other organisations, along with the staff who provide them.
NHS Direct chair Joanne Shaw, said: “The closure of NHS Direct marks the end of its 15 years of continuous innovation, during which time it has led the world in remote health assessment, advice and information.”
