Management in Practice’s clinical commissioning group (CCG) ambassador has been named one of the country’s ten champions for health and wellbeing boards (HWB).

Dr Joe McGilligan, chair of the East Surrey (ESyDoc) CCG and joint chair of the East Surrey HWB, was awarded the Department of Health-led initiative earlier this month.

He was given the title by Dr Jane Povey, clinical leadership development director, medical directorate transition team at the NHS Commissioning Board.

Dr McGilligan said he was “very proud” to be named a HWB champion.

“Being given the title of a DH champion for HWB is a great recognition of the work that has been done in this area in Surrey,” he said.

“HWBs will be where the real changes are in the NHS.”

The DH HWB champions initiative is part of the ongoing work at the National Learning Network for Health and Wellbeing Boards.

The network of champions will be expected to promote partnership working between CCGs and local government.

A spokesperson from the DH said this work is “very much in development”.
