The Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) has welcomed the planned increase in spending on the NHS over the next three years revealed in Alistair Darling’s pre-budget repot.

Chancellor Alistair Darling said yesterday that there will be a 4% rise each year in funding for the NHS over the next three years.

Commenting on the Comprehensive Spending Review, the Chief Executive of the IHM, Sue Hodgetts said that while she welcomes the increase of 4% over inflation, “no one should be in any doubt that this is a reduction in the rate of investment compared to the last three years.”

“Much of the previous period’s increased spending has been poured into pay settlements. The challenge for healthcare managers over the next three years will be to continue supporting the reform agenda within far tighter financial constraints.

“Patients and the public will expect to see more bangs for their Bucks in the future and that can only be delivered through better used of resources and allowing managers the freedom to deliver responsive local services effectively.”
