Family doctors earned on average £100,170 during the first full year of the new GP contract, according to updated figures published by The Information Centre for health and social care today (Tuesday 26 April 2007).
The figures show that, after expenses, GP earnings rose 22.8% in 2004/05 compared with the previous year.
The new figures update key findings in the 2004–05 GP Earnings and Expenses Enquiry (EEQ) results, published last November, and put them on a comparable basis with figures from previous years. The original report included the employers’ superannuation contribution (on average £6,234 per GP) in GPs’ pay. This element had not been included in previous years’ data and has been removed from the updated figures released today.
The updated figures were produced by The Technical Steering Committee, which includes representatives of the four UK health departments, NHS Employers and the British Medical Association (BMA). The committee agreed both the original report and today’s technical update.
More detailed analysis about GP earnings and expenses in 2004/05 is planned to be published in a full report in the summer.
