More than eight out of 10 people looking for work in the public sector are expecting a post-general election pay freeze, a study has shown.
Online recruitment firm Totaljobs.com also revealed that almost the same amount of jobseekers had concerns over how secure their jobs would be after the election.
A quarter of the 8,000 people surveyed were working in the public sector, while two out of five were unemployed.
John Salt, website director at Totaljobs.com, said: “Traditionally, the public sector has been counter-cyclical, investing during recessions in an attempt to pull the rest of the economy up.
“That is what we have seen recently with the public sector continuing to recruit and raise wages, but with public finances stretched as never before, we are starting to see signs of the public sector contraction we predicted at the end of last year.”
The study also found that almost 40% of workers in the public sector were unsure of who they would vote for in the general election.
