The General Medical Council (GMC) has apologised for sending ‘threatening’ revalidation letters to hundreds of GPs who had already submitted evidence.

The letters threatened to remove the doctor’s licence to practice, despite the fact that many had already completed the process.

According to LMC leaders, the tone of the letter was “alarming and upsetting” to those who received it.

The GMC has apologised and agreed to tighten up its procedures and alter the wording of the letter.

A GMC spokesman said that the letters are automatically generated if a responsible officer had not sent a recommendation within 10 days of a GPs revalidation date.
