Trainee GPs can now become members of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) at the start of their career.
It was decided that since trainee GPs must now complete a new RCGP assessment in order to finish their training they should also gain seamless college membership.
Doctors in speciality training programmes for general practice will gain “Associates in Training” membership.
Every member will receive an e-portfolio account, access to online learning support, discounted RCGP assessment fees and a subscription to the college’s publication.
RCGP Chairman Mayur Lakhani said: “Trainees are the future and this is a landmark development.
“General practice is the place to be: we want to do everything possible to ensure trainees and newly qualified GPs thrive in an exciting but challenging environment.”
