NHS Direct has been singled out in the 2007 Euro Health Consumer Index for 2007 as a “star performer on healthcare information”.

Visits to the NHS Direct website have been steadily climbing in the past year and now stand at 2.35 million, up from 1.89 million in July.

September visits to the site are also 17.5% higher than the 2 million monthly target and 23.4% higher than in July.

Ronnette Lucraft, NHS Direct commercial director, said: “We are delighted to have been highlighted in the Index.

“The website, telephone and digital TV service are the key channels we use to deliver the quantity of health advice and information people need to care for themselves at home.”

The NHS Direct health encyclopaedia had 271,832 hits this September. With the most visited topics being diabetes, IBS, back pain and pregnancy.

The second most popular section of the site was found to be the self-help guide. This takes visitors through a series of questions and offers advice accordingly. The top topics were joint pains, female urinary and vaginal problems in adults and rashes.

Adrian Reyes-Hughes, associate NHS Direct clinical director, said: “We are pleased that our website continues to be a valuable information source and that its usage rates are higher than ever.”
