Non-urgent emergency number NHS 111 will be implemented in Wales, depsite problems with England’s roll-out.
Despite some patients in England facing long waiting times, the Welsh government said NHS 111 will be “vital” to reducing demand in A&E.
Dr Charlotte Jones from the British Medical Association’s Welsh GP Committee believes the system will only provide benefits with significant resources and if correctly implanted.
Dr Jones told WalesOnline: “We are aware that various models are being looked at and no decision has been made as yet. But what we don’t want to see is the situation in England where it was rushed through with little consideration.”
Wales needs to learn lessons from the problems experienced in England, according to Dr Jones.
A spokeswoman for the Welsh Government said the aim is to create a system which is “simple, safe and reliable” for people to use.
NHS 111 would become the first point of contact for access to urgent but non-emergency care, including access to GP Out of Hours Services.
