A leadership skills tool for healthcare professionals has been downloaded more than 50,000 times since its launch.
The NHS Leadership Academy’s Self Assessment Tool aims to help clinicians to identify their “leadership strengths and weaknesses”.
The tool is based on the Leadership Framework (LF), which describes the qualities clinicians need to plan, deliver and transform the healthcare service.
“It’s a great starting point for anyone interested in leadership and may also help with reflection for appraisal and revalidation purposes,” said GP Dr Penny Newman.
The public health consultant and NHS Midlands and East primary care advisor added: “Now more than ever, the NHS and patients need doctors who embrace leadership and who can identify their learning needs against nationally recognised standards.”
The free tool consists of a scenario-based questionnaire that can test for medical, clinical or full LF skills.
Development advice and instant feedback is given on where the user’s healthcare competencies lie.
On finishing the multiple choice questionnaire an ‘action plan’ can be generated, with access to a range of materials to support the users development.
The confidential NHS Leadership Academy Self Assessment tool was launched in October 2011 to help clinicians and healthcare staff at all levels.
