Dr John Hodgeson of Partners4Health won the prestigious General Practitioner of the Year Award at the General Practice Awards in London last night.
Dr Hodgeson is the GP and medical director of Partners4Health, the GP-led NHS body who leads the Hospital at Home Project.
The winning project aims to deliver a service where patients can be treated at home for a range of conditions that would normally require hospitalisation such as end of life medical emergencies, acute kidney illness and acute confusion.
Although the service was complex to set up, feedback from customers and staff has been positive with 100% of the 692 patients surveyed claiming to be satisfied with their care and 100% of the staff claiming they would recommend the service to family and friends.
The service has been running for over two years, and has been commissioned for a further three years.
During this time they are set to expand over a wide geographical area and to work in closer co-operation with the Countess of Chester foundation trust. This will give their doctors an option not to admit patients who would otherwise have been admitted and support the early discharge of patients still needing medical optimisation.
Even with more than 35 years working in general practice, Dr Hodgeson described the development of Hospital at Home as being “the most exciting, challenging and rewarding service.”
