A detailed breakdown of public spending over the past two years is to be released by the Treasury.
Officials said the Combined Online Information System – known as Coins – would contain millions of lines on government expenditure.
Prime Minister David Cameron said the system – one of a number of planned databases – would improve openness by showing the public how their money was being used.
Treasury bosses claimed the raw data would be meaningless to most people, but expressed hope that other institutions would use their technical nous to make sense of the statistics.
Chancellor George Osborne (pictured) claimed last year that former Prime Minister Gordon Brown had made it impossible for the Conservatives to formulate policy by blocking the release of such information.
The claim was strongly denied by Labour, which said the decision was taken by the civil service.
The move comes not long after the names, pay and perks of the 172 senior civil servants earning more than £150,000 were published.
