Estimates of NHS staff earnings published today show that nurses are making 14% more money than they did in 2004.
The Information Centre has estimated mean annual earnings based on pay data collected between January and March 2007.
These are the first pay estimates to be based on the Electronic Staff Record, a new payroll and human resources system being implemented across the NHS.
Qualified nurses are estimated to earn a basic yearly salary of £26,100 a year.
On top of this, nurses earn an extra 15% from overtime and location payments, bringing their earnings up to £30,100 a year.
Commenting on the figures, Acting Chief Executive of the Information Centre Tim Straughan said: “Independent, reliable, and up to date information on the earnings of staff in particular roles helps inform pay negotiations and support financial planning.
“These estimates also enable comparisons across professions, for example how the pay of nurses compares with that of teachers or police offices.”
