A Wandsworth doctor has been chosen from hundreds of applicants to represent London in a competition to mark the NHS turning 70.
Dr Sian Job, who works at NHS Wandsworth CCG, was nominated by her local Conservative MP Justine Greening to compete against three other candidates in the patient and public involvement award category in the NHS 70 Parliamentary Awards.
Her CCG, her MP and a practice manager she has worked with have commended Dr Job for her dedication to make sure patients have a say on local health services.
Involving patients at practice level
Practice manager at Lavender Hill Group Practice in Battersea Nargis Khan told Management in Practice that they are one of the practices Dr Job worked with as Productive Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) lead.
She said: ‘She just works tirelessly with much acknowledgment to ensure practices engage and involve patients not just through meeting but making it routine.’
Dr Job attended the practice’s patient participation group (PPG) meetings to help practice staff focus on areas of concern put forward by the patient population.
She also suggested the best ways to encourage more patients to join the PPG and get patients to share their experience of the practice, Ms Khan said.
Work that ‘benefits everyone’
Chair of Wandsworth CCG Dr Nicola Jones said: ‘Sian has experienced general practice pressures first hand, and developed PPI, to support staff and clinicians to work with their patients in a way that benefits everyone.’
One example of this is asking staff working in GP surgeries to put themsleves in their patients’ shoes.
She continued: ‘We encourage patients to have their say about local services, gaining valuable insights to improve healthcare. Staff also visit community groups, forging relationships and fostering common understanding.’
Celebrating NHS’ staff achievements
Along with the other shortlisted candidates, Dr Job will be invited to the national awards ceremony on 4 July, the day before the NHS’s 70th birthday.
MP Justine Greening said: ‘Through her work with GP practices Dr Job is helping to make sure patients and the public in Wandsworth can have their say about health services and I wish her the best of luck at the national awards ceremony.’
