The new chief executive of NHS Confederation has been announced as Niall Dickson, former chief of the General Medical Council (GMC).
Announcing the appointment today (11 January), the Confederation’s interim chair, Stephen Dorrell, said: “Niall will help ensure the NHS Confederation remains the first port-of-call when the health service needs a voice, binding in the highest levels of experience and influence across the full spectrum of health and care services.”
Dickson said: “It’s a great privilege to join the Confederation as it works with its members and partners to deliver better, safer care and the fundamental reforms that are needed to make the system sustainable.”
It was revealed that Dickson, who will take up his new role on 1 February, would be stepping down as GMC head in January last year and he left at the end in 2016, after seven years in the role.
Previously he worked as a journalist for the BBC and Nursing Times and was the former chief executive of the King’s Fund (2004-2009).
