Staff and patients are enjoying better access to a Stockport surgery thanks to a £300,000 improvement.
NHS Property Services spent the money on the access to the Heaton Norris Health Centre along with more security measures and replacing a leaking roof.
It also upgraded all the toilets at the practice for more than 5,000 patients near Stockport town centre.
Access was changed in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Work included putting in a new surface and removing cobbles beside the previous access route.
Fire doors were replaced to meet fire regulations and security was also upgraded to “meet high risk security issues” at the practice which employs 23 people.
CCTV was installed at the surgery and security experts fitted electronic key pads to the doors.
The roof was completely replaced during the 18 week project.
NHS Property Services construction manager Sally Teague who was in charge of the renovations said it was business as usual during the building work.
She added: ‘The work involved significant disruption to the site as a temporary entrance had to be created.”
She said the work was done to improve the centre’s facilities, extend its life and ensure it offers safe and quality services.
“The refurbished centre provides a better experience and environment for all patients.”
Staff and patients were asked what they wanted to see before the work got under way.
Access to the surgery was rated highly in this year’s patients survey with seventy per cent of respondents finding it “very easy” to get into the building.
