Focusing on health and safety in the workplace can cut work-related sickness and brings “immense financial benefits” to employers, the British Safety Council (BSC) explained.

This comes after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a non-departmental public body, launched its new strategy for health and safety – Helping Great Britain Work Well. The strategy focuses on six key areas: supporting small employers, tackling work-related ill health, keeping pace with new challenges, managing risk well, promoting health and safety, and sharing successes.

In response to the strategy, Neal Stone, policy and standards director of BSC, added that the Council “remains committed to highlighting the immense, some would say unsustainable, cost of work-related ill health.

“One of our priorities is getting the message across that health and safety, managed in a sensible, targeted and proportionate way brings not only immense financial benefits to workers, employers and the public purse but social benefits too. The evidence is there, and is supported by our members,” he said.

The strategy from HSE states that getting risk management right is an enabler for productivity, innovation and growth and is integral to business success as well as the wellbeing of workers.
