The Party of Wales plans to recruit 1,000 extra doctors to keep the NHS sustainable in all parts of Wales and helping to improve access to GPs and cut waiting times, Hywel Williams, Plaid Cymru’s Arfon candidate, said this week.

“Plaid Cymru will introduce structured financial incentives to recruit doctors in problematic areas so that we can plug any gaps and make our NHS strong and sustainable.

“The Labour party’s plans to recruit an extra 8,000 doctors across England and Wales is likely to mean fewer than 400 doctors in Wales, particularly when we consider that Wales currently trains less than our proportional share of doctors. That’s why Plaid Cymru’s plans focus on training as well as recruitment.”

Its other plans include integrating the health and social care services, increasing the capacity of the ambulance service, recruiting more nursing and paramedic staff, and increasing the capacity of Welsh medical schools (though no specific numbers were given on these points).

It has also pledged to oppose the the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) EU, which could open up the NHS to commissions from the USA.
