Practices across the UK have been urged to help shape plans to tackle a premises crisis that has been “brushed under the carpet”.
British Medical Association (BMA) General Practitioners committee chair Dr Chaand Nagpaul said that the group will be pushing for increased investment in primary care premises.
The group will also be setting out other steps the government can take towards supporting practices.
A poll sent out to GPs across the UK will be used to shape the plans to improve “decaying” primary care premises.
Dr Nagpaul said: “Premises are one of the key impediments to GPs being able to provide the services their patients need. Since before the new contract there has been no major investment, but there has been a massive escalation in the volume of care GPs are providing.”
Speaking to GP magazine, Dr Nagpaul said the GPC plans to publish a clear set of proposals on premises by autumn.
He said: “We will come up with concrete proposals that the government could implement that would provide greater support for GPs to relocate or develop premises.”
