A National Cancer Survivorship vision is being published by the Department of Health and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Survivors of cancer in Sheffield, Hull and Leeds will take part in a trial testing the proposal.
The “vision” states that all survivors should have: a personalised assessment and care plan; support to self-manage their condition; and information on the long-term effects of living with and beyond cancer.
The trusts in the trial are Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, working with Yorkshire Cancer Network.
Regional Director for Public Health at NHS Yorkshire and the Humber, Paul Johnstone, said: “Every patient is different so we feel it is important that those we are caring for get tailormade treatment that addresses their needs specifically.”
Health Minister Ann Keen said: “The impact of cancer does not end after treatment. Cancer survivors, their carers and families need support and services to meet their needs. That is why we have teamed up with Macmillan Cancer Support and are making a firm commitment that by 2012 all cancer survivors will receive the support and services they need.”
