Dr Brian Keighley, a senior GP in Balfron, Stirlingshire, has been elected as chairman of the British Medical Association in Scotland.
He succeeds Aberdeen consultant Peter Terry, who held the position for five years.
Dr Keighley (pictured), aged 61, graduated from Glasgow University Medical School in 1972 before beginning his training in hospitals in Glasgow and Falkirk. He then moved to a GP trainee post in Balfron.
In 1975, Dr Keighley became a partner in the practice, where he has remained for the past 34 years. Dr Keighley also worked as a police surgeon in the area until recently.
Dr Keighley said: “Scotland’s NHS faces a great number of challenges in the coming years. Increasing financial pressures will make it ever more important for government and NHS managers to work with the medical profession to ensure that the range of high quality of services that Scottish patients deserve is maintained.”
