A pioneering action plan that aims to develop epilepsy services has been unveiled in Wales in a bid to ensure easier access to high quality, consistent and patient-centred care.
The “groundbreaking” initiative also aims to provide earlier assessment of the condition to reduce the risk of incorrect diagnosis and provide appropriate local treatment.
The launch of the Epilepsy Plan, by Health Minister Edwina Hart (pictured), comes after a 12-week consultation with health professionals, local health boards, NHS trusts and the voluntary sector.
The health minister said: “It is crucial that people with epilepsy can effectively access the right services at the right time and in the right place. This is what this unique service development directive proposes.”
Epilepsy charities have welcomed the move, which will help the 1,500 people newly diagnosed with the condition each year in Wales.
Margaret Stanley, of the All Wales Epilepsy Forum, said: “The new Epilepsy Plan for Wales is a groundbreaking initiative which has the potential to vastly improve the lives of people with epilepsy.
“The voluntary sector will continue to work closely with the Welsh Assembly Government to ensure that the plan is implemented successfully.”
