A special bank holiday should be created to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS, a left-of-centre think tank has argued.
Sunder Katwala, General Secretary of the Fabian Society, said that as a nation with fewer public holidays than most countries in Europe, the work/life balance of Britons would be improved by the addition of a new day off.
But he said it needed to be a day that every Briton could get involved with.
Mr Katwala was one of the contributors to a four-day long debate on the desire for an extra public holiday in Britain, which was a joint GMTV/Fabian Society initiative to get the public involved.
The prime minister was in the studio and listened in to the debate. Gordon Brown has already signalled his backing for the idea of an extra public holiday to celebrate Britishness.
GMTV was holding a public poll on which day would be the most popular for a new public holiday.
