Dr James Kingsland, Chairman of the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC), has been appointed to Lord Darzi’s NHS review board.
The announcement was made by Ben Bradshaw, Minister of State for Health, at NAPC’s annual conference, held last week. Mr Bradshaw confirmed that the appointment of Dr Kingsland would significantly strengthen Lord Darzi’s board.
Dr Kingsland, who gave a keynote speech on practice-based commissioning at the Management in Practice Event in Manchester earlier this year, says:
“I am delighted to be invited to be involved in the work of the review board on behalf of NAPC and its wider membership.
“This is an important and key review for primary care and it is critical that contributions are made by the innovative and forward-thinking clinicians and managers, whom NAPC represents.
“It will be important to strike the right balance in delivering solutions that address local problems, while avoiding reinvention of the wheel over and over again.”

“I believe they have appointed a primary care candidate because of the criticism that primary care was getting reviewed by a surgeon (and what does a surgeon know about anything outside of surgery?). However, they will have appointed someone who is completely behind their “agenda”. This will make no difference to the outcome, as that has probably already been written before even Lord Darzi started. It would be nice to be appreciated for hitting all the targets we have already hit (set by the government) and not constantly attacked” – David Doig, Buxton
“It will make a pleasant change to have someone who knows what they are talking about, rather than observers who are out of date” – Name and address supplied
