The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a case against a Birmingham doctor, who was accused of arranging an illegal abortion for her daughter.
It has informed Birmingham Crown Court that there is insufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of conviction against Dr Saroj Adlakha and her daughter Shilpa Abrol.
In 2005, former Kings Heath GP Dr Adlakha and her daughter were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit child destruction abroad.
They were arrested after an investigation by undercover journalists into a Spanish clinic, amid concerns about alleged late abortions carried out there prompted a police inquiry.
The CPS was handed a file alleging that, in November 2003, Dr Adlakha arranged for her daughter, then a teenager, to have an abortion in Spain after her pregnancy had passed the UK 24-week legal limit for terminations.
The CPS said in a statement: “All efforts by the prosecution to establish the authenticity of records of the alleged late abortions through official channels with the Spanish authorities, and police enquiries elsewhere, were unsuccessful.”
